“Consultants to the global SAR family”

Course Design

SARtacs course design process is where appropriate, based on the guidance set out by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) as well as on IMO model course syllabi where these are available. SARtacs strongly believes that IMO/ICAO guidance, by virtue of requiring global appeal, takes a generic approach. Every country will have differences on how their SAR system is configured and the procedures they adopt. It is therefore essential for SARtacs to work closely with the client to ensure the learning for a particular project is aligned with local geographical, environmental and organisational structures and cultures.

Adult Learning

Course design also adheres rigorously to the “systematic approach to training” methodology espoused by the CIPD. As such every course is fully documented with course and individual session aims and objectives. Key learning points are determined during the design stage and woven into each session to ensure a balance between standardisation and the needs of each student group. This allows flexibility in the speed at which course groups learn and at the same time ensuring that critical learning points are addressed.

All courses are designed with the principles of adult learning to the fore. A variety of learning methods are used and intended to appeal to a wide range of styles, these include:

  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Syndicate and peer learning exercises
  • Learning reviews and quiz sessions
  • Table-top exercising with peer and trainer feedback
  • Audio/video sessions

The working day is organised to give a balance between the length of sessions whilst at the same time allowing appropriate refreshment and comfort breaks. This ensures that students can maximise their learning potential in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Course Materials

SARtacs has an environmental policy which avoids the use of paper products so far as is practical. In support of this, each student will be provided with a USB memory drive. This contains all the course handout material, various supporting forms and utilities, a course group photograph, exercises, as well as a record of group key learning points which are captured throughout the course. Students are encouraged to make their own handwritten notes as the course progresses.

All courses are fully documented in an electronic format.
